Father claims his 9-year-old son spent $118,000 on a corporate credit card to promote a gaming YouTube channel
A nine-year-old YouTuber allegedly spent $118,000 on his father’s work credit card on Google Ads campaigns. The boy used the money to promote his own Minecraft and Roblox videos, and his family only learned about the huge expenses after the man was summoned for a meeting with the company’s management and finance department.
The story began when a father named Dave decided to help his son Mike, who was frustrated with the low number of views and subscribers on his channel. The father showed the boy how promotion works and set up the first test advertising campaign for $20. During this, he explained the basic principles to the child: choosing an audience, setting a budget, and launching.
However, Dave’s corporate card was saved in a Google account linked to his work email, files, and payments. Once he understood the mechanics of the tool, nine-year-old Mike began creating new campaigns on his own within three weeks.
"He didn’t really realize there had to be a limit. The logic was simple: more money means more views," Dave said.
Soon, the father was called to a meeting with the company’s CEO and finance team. He was given a statement of $118,000 in spending over the past three weeks on his corporate credit card. The transactions were for promoting videos called Mighty Mike and Epic Roblox. As a result, three of the promotional videos actually garnered about 200,000 views.
The man is currently unsure whether he will stay at his job or whether his employer will seek compensation for damages. The father admits his own guilt for leaving his payment details publicly available without parental controls or limits set. The family plans to temporarily freeze the channel and impose the necessary restrictions. When asked by his father if the boy had anything to say to the viewers, he replied briefly: "I’m definitely done."
Соціальні мережі та штучний інтелект формують глобальні наративи про війну в Україні. Як їх використовують українці та росіяни — аналітика від Foreign Policy
