Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said that a girl who spent more than 10 hours a day on his social network was «overusing» the service.
Mosseri made the remarks during his mental health trial, which began this week in Los Angeles, the BBC reports.
Lawyers for Meta, which owns Instagram, argued that the lead plaintiff in the case, known by the initials KGM, was hurt by other things in her life, not Instagram. The lawsuit also claims YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok reached a settlement before the trial began.
Mosseri said the court must determine whether Instagram was a significant factor in the plaintiff’s mental health problems, noting that she was experiencing significant problems in her life long before she started using social media. He said it was impossible to determine how much Instagram use was too much.
The Instagram executive noted that usage is an issue «individually for each person,» explaining that one person can use Instagram «more than you and feel good about it.»
«It’s important to distinguish between clinical addiction and problematic use. I’m sure I said I was addicted to a Netflix series when I binge-watched it all late one night, but I don’t think that’s the same as clinical addiction,» he added.
The plaintiff’s attorney pointed to a study that found 60% of Instagram users reported seeing or experiencing bullying in the previous week. The attorney added that KGM had filed more than 300 reports to Instagram about bullying on the platform. He also asked Mosseri what he thought about the plaintiff’s longest daily Instagram use being 16 hours.
«That sounds like problematic usage,» the Instagram executive replied.
At the entrance to the courthouse, Adam Mosseri was greeted by a crowd that included spectators, protesters, and parents who were not involved in the trial but say they have seen their children suffer from what they say is an addiction to social media.
Let us remind you that Roman Shulga, a Software Engineer from Koryukivka , developed an application to combat addiction to social media and smartphone games. He created it to help his son.
