The Trump administration is considering restricting TP-Link's activities in the US. What's behind it?

The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering restricting the activities of one of the largest router manufacturers, TP-Link Systems, in the US.

According to Bloomberg, this decision is related to the company’s Chinese origin and, accordingly, «threats to US national security.»

The publication adds that this decision has been actively promoted in recent weeks, especially on the eve of the planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Representatives of both parties — Republicans and Democrats — are focusing on the company’s ties to China, and also expressing concern that its wireless equipment could be used by Chinese hackers. Thus, back in May, more than 10 US Republican lawmakers, including Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton, called for a ban on the sale of TP-Link products in the United States.

In turn, a TP-Link spokeswoman said that the company «will continue to work closely with the US Department of Commerce to resolve any concerns, including mitigating any risks.»

Bloomberg recalls that TP-Link, founded in China almost three decades ago, has recently been making efforts to distance itself from its origins: last year, it completed the division into two separate structures: an American division headquartered in Irvine, California, and a Chinese division headquartered in Shenzhen.

Previously, dev.ua wrote that several popular TP-Link router models, which have long been no longer supported by the manufacturer, were under attack by hackers. It turned out that due to a critical vulnerability, attackers can take complete control of the device.
