Lips was first arrested in Tennessee on July 14 by Fargo police. According to law enforcement, several cases of bank fraud occurred in and around Fargo in the months leading up to that, CNN reports.
In their search for a suspect in bank fraud cases, investigators used «facial recognition technology from our partner agency» as well as «additional investigative measures independent of artificial intelligence to aid identification.»
«At some point, our partner agency in West Fargo acquired its own AI-based facial recognition system, which we were not aware of at the management level… We would not authorize its use, and it has been banned since,» a Fargo police spokesman said.
The police department said it was working with startup Clearview AI, which has a database of billions of photos collected from the internet, including social media. Clearview «identified a potential suspect with features similar to Angela Lipps,» and West Fargo police forwarded the report to Fargo police.
Fargo police acknowledged «several errors» in the case and promised to make changes to their work, but stopped short of a direct apology.
