Defense technology startup Anduril Industries has suffered numerous setbacks during testing of its autonomous weapons systems. In particular, problems with its Altius drones were reported by SBU fighters.
more than a dozen unmanned boats that malfunctioned during a Navy exercise off the coast of California in May, prompting sailors to warn of a safety breach and potential threat to life;
a mechanical problem that damaged the engine of Anduril’s Fury unmanned fighter jet during summer ground testing;
a test of the Anvil anti-drone system in August that caused a 22-acre fire in Oregon.
Founded in 2017 by Palmer Luckey, Anduril raised $2.5 billion in June at a valuation of $30.5 billion. The company has won numerous military contracts, including programs to build autonomous aircraft and counter-drone systems.
The only real-world combat experience of Anduril in Ukraine was reportedly problematic as well. SBU fighters found that Altius drones were crashing and missing their targets. The problems were so severe that the Defense Forces stopped using the drones in 2024 and have not used them since.
Anduril assured that these problems are typical of weapons development, that its engineering team is making significant progress, and that the above incidents do not indicate any hidden flaws in its technology.
