In a message to subscribers, Anthropic warned that it would no longer allow «the use of Claude subscription limits for third-party interfaces, including OpenClaw.» Users will have to pay for additional usage via «a pay-as-you-go option billed separately from your subscription.»
It is noted that the surcharge only applies to OpenClaw for now, but will eventually extend to all other third-party tools. Product manager Claude Code noted that his models were not intended for use in third-party tools.
Earlier, Peter Steinberger, the developer of the personal AI assistant OpenClaw, joined Anthropic’s competitor, OpenAI. He noted that OpenClaw will continue to exist as an open source project with the support of OpenAI.
According to Steinberger, he and OpenClaw board member Dave Morin «tried to bring common sense to Anthropic,» but were only able to delay the price increase for a week.
In late March, Anthropic announced an OpenClaw competitor, Claude Code Channels, which offers its own Claude Code AI agent management system for Discord or Telegram messengers. This allows users to directly interact with Claude Code at any time while on the go and give it instructions on how to write code.
Recall that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called artificial intelligence applications one of the areas that brings the greatest benefits to companies. In his opinion, OpenClaw and AI agents are the most important software of our time.
