AI companies have long sought to win over customers from the scientific and pharmaceutical sectors: OpenAI, Amazon, Google, and other giants have their own tools and platforms for life sciences.
But Anthropic’s planned move is one of the most direct public attempts by a leading AI company to go into drug development on its own, The Verge reports . It puts it in an unusual position, as it would now sell its software to other drugmakers, potentially competing with it.
Thus, Anthropic joins a large-scale race that already includes AI-focused drug developers such as Insilico, Google DeepMind subsidiary Isomorphic Labs, as well as biotech startups and Big Pharma giants that are building or buying their own AI tools.
Anthropic provided very few specific details about what it hopes to achieve in drug development, and did not respond to a request for comment from The Verge.
However, at the recent event “The Briefing: AI for Science,” Anthropic introduced Claude Science, a new “AI workbench for scientists.” It brings together disparate tools and datasets in a single environment, and can also create graphs and visuals. Anthropic emphasizes that the launch is designed to “dramatically accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and the development of medical innovations.”
