Anthropic creates a new team "AI and the rule of law": what it will do

“AnthropicAI has already explored what AI means for the economy. This same team asks a very different question: what will it mean for the executive branch, the courts, and elections—and for the public discourse on which constitutional democracy ultimately rests?” Matthew Botvinick, a research fellow at Yale Law School who will lead the team, wrote in X.

According to a job description for a full-time position, Anthropic will pay between $295,000 and $345,000 per year. Candidates must have a law degree, a Ph.D. or equivalent in political science or a related field, or “significant experience working in government at a senior level,” Business Insider reports .

“The ideal candidate understands the technological landscape well enough to analyze the opportunities and risks of AI, and is also well enough versed in democratic institutions to see at what points these risks turn into structural threats,” the job description says.

Anthropic has identified four areas for the AI ​​and Rule of Law team to focus on: “assessing AI security through the lens of legal compliance, analyzing institutional vulnerabilities, emerging legal issues in the field of advanced AI systems, and tools that strengthen democratic processes.”
