«After careful analysis, we have concluded that Google’s technology provides the most powerful foundation for Apple Foundation Models, and we are excited about the new innovative possibilities it will open up for our users,» Apple and Google said in a joint statement.
Apple has previously been reported to be preparing a major update to Siri and testing integration with Google Gemini to turn the voice assistant into a full-fledged web search tool. Neither Apple nor Google confirmed the price of the deal, but previous reports indicate that Apple could pay Google around $1 billion for access to its AI technology. Apple has been testing technologies from competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic for some time.
Interestingly, Google has been paying Apple billions of dollars for years to remain the default search engine in Safari on Mac, iPad, and iPhone. In 2023, it was reported that the amount of this deal could reach $18 billion. Cooperation on AI, hindering Apple’s failures in this area, looks radically different.
The multi-year partnership will see Apple use Gemini models and Google’s cloud technology for future Apple entry-level models. The deal is not exclusive, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Apple is also working on its own AI models and has changed the leadership of this department. Long-time head of AI, John Giannandria, has resigned, and his place has been taken by a specialist who led the AI division at Microsoft and worked at Google for more than 15 years.
