Apple has finally ended hardware support for three Intel-based MacBook models
Apple has officially declared three 2017 and 2018 MacBook laptop models with Intel processors obsolete. This means the complete cessation of their official hardware maintenance - from now on, owners will only have to contact third-party service centers.
Apple has officially declared three 2017 and 2018 MacBook laptop models with Intel processors obsolete. This means the complete cessation of their official hardware maintenance - from now on, owners will only have to contact third-party service centers.
According to AppleInsider, the list of obsolete devices includes:
13-inch MacBook Pro (2017) with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. The latest compatible operating system for it is macOS Ventura, released in 2022.
MacBook Air with Retina display (2018). The latest operating system available for it is macOS Sonoma (it is currently two versions behind macOS).
13-inch MacBook Pro (2018) with four Thunderbolt 3 ports. The maximum supported OS for this device is macOS Sequoia, which is one version behind the current macOS Tahoe.
According to Apple's rules, a device is considered "vintage" if it has been discontinued for 5 to 7 years. During this period, the company can still provide spare parts if they are available. If a device is not sold for more than 7 years, it becomes "obsolete" and its service in authorized services is completely discontinued.
From now on, repairs of these models are only possible in unofficial workshops, but in 2026 this may already be economically unfeasible.
