Apple is developing an AutoLock feature to protect unlocked iPhones from theft

Apple is continuing to work on a new security system for the iPhone that will automatically lock the smartphone if it is snatched from the owner’s hands. Details about the internal protection mechanisms have been revealed in the code of a test version of the iOS update.
This is reported by 9to5Mac with reference to the analysis of the beta version of iOS 27.2 beta 2.
The new technology is internally called AutoLock. It analyzes the device’s status based on several indicators and initiates a screen lock in case of suspicious actions.
The system identifies potential theft based on a combination of signals:
a sharp acceleration or jerk, typical of snatching a smartphone;
Sudden or prolonged loss of connection with a paired Apple Watch;
prolonged lack of network connection;
the smartphone being unlocked for longer than usual.
To avoid false positives, the developers have implemented a signal evaluation system. The mechanism allows preventive factors to veto the blocking — for example, if the device has successfully passed biometric authentication, is in a familiar location, or applications are running background tasks.
AutoLock is currently in beta and only works in a background test mode. Apple is testing tracking algorithms without activating the lock itself, so the feature is not yet available to users as an option.
Apple has previously introduced Stolen Device Protection, which requires biometrics when changing important settings outside of home or work. The new AutoLock technology aims to complement these tools and protect data in the event that the device is snatched directly from your hands while unlocked.
The first new iPhones did not reach Ukraine: at the border with Poland, customs officers stopped two attempts to illegally import the iPhone 18 Pro Max
