An American startup is turning regular excavators into unmanned ones. They are already operating on construction sites in the US
American startup Bedrock Robotics has taught conventional excavators to work without people in the cabins. Equipment with this system is already digging the ground, digging the ground on its own and loading trucks on real construction sites. Now the company, founded just two years ago by former Waymo engineers, has attracted $600 million in investment. It is valued at $4.1 billion.
The startup has developed a set of hardware and software that allows you to turn a conventional construction machine into an autonomous one.
So the excavator can do the excavation work on its own while the construction workers are busy with other tasks. And the autonomous equipment should work alongside people and other machines, without forcing the company to completely rebuild its usual workflow.
The construction industry is finding it increasingly difficult to find experienced excavator operators, Bedrock said, as it can take more than five years to master the machine. In addition, a significant portion of workers are approaching retirement. The Associated Builders and Contractors estimates that more than 40% of construction workers will retire in the next five years.
Therefore, Bedrock expects that autonomous technology will help companies cope with labor shortages.
Earlier, dev.ua wrote that the American company Zinova showed a construction robot that can use construction tools. During the demonstration, it independently drilled, hammered nails, installed reinforcement, and assembled a concrete panel.
