“People just press Enter.” Developer’s post about soulless AI programming caught the attention of Musk and other IT gurus
A post by an engineer under the nickname v0xium on Twitter has garnered nearly 5 million views and sparked heated debate among IT professionals. The developer said that due to total automation using Claude Code, his work has become "soul-sucking," and programmers are massively losing their understanding of how their software works.
A post by an engineer under the nickname v0xium on Twitter has garnered nearly 5 million views and sparked heated debate among IT professionals. The developer said that due to total automation using Claude Code, his work has become "soul-sucking," and programmers are massively losing their understanding of how their software works.
This is reported by Business Insider. According to an anonymous developer, Anthropic’s artificial intelligence tool generates absolutely everything for the company: from technical specifications and tests to tasks and final reports.
This leaves employees working 12-13 hours a day under constant pressure from management to release as many features as possible, with little time to analyze the generated code or understand what’s going on "under the hood."
“Nobody thinks anymore. Writing code was never the bottleneck; the systems around it were,” v0xium notes. He emphasizes that developers are becoming “human proxies” who simply pass machine results on without any validation.
The publication was met with reactions from prominent figures in the tech world. Elon Musk commented on the situation with a brief “Ouch,” and venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya compared developers to players pressing buttons in front of slot machines in a casino. According to him, the value of automation lies not in the speed of software creation, but in understanding intent and improving product quality. GitLab CEO Bill Staples added that in the current environment, “humans have become just an orchestration layer for machines.”
Other industry insiders echo the concerns. Menlo Ventures partner Didi Das has previously said that experienced engineers are facing an “identity crisis bordering on depression” as they are forced to review an endless stream of generated code instead of developing. AI developer Liu Shenyu at DeepSeek has echoed similar sentiments, predicting that soon, engineers will only have to manage agents, rather than write code themselves.
