Preliminary results of the inspection indicated that the drone contained detonators but was empty of explosives, allaying initial concerns that had led to the call for explosive ordnance disposal experts, Greek newspaper eKathimerini reported .
Authorities are currently considering several scenarios for the drone's intended use. One line of investigation suggests its possible use in drug trafficking operations, possibly as a tool for smugglers.
Investigators also do not rule out a connection with planned attacks on ships of Russia's so-called "shadow fleet", which is used to transport Russian oil to circumvent Western sanctions.
3 were first discovered by fishermen near Cape Ducato inside a coastal cave. They fixed the device and towed it to the port of Vasiliki, where it was handed over to the Greek Coast Guard.
An investigation is currently underway.
