Bill Gates, once the world's richest man, has accused Elon Musk at least twice in the past week of "killing" children in the poorest countries due to cuts in foreign aid under the Trump administration, The Financial Times reports .
Gates said Musk was directly responsible for the elimination of the U.S. Agency for International Development — a decision that Gates said undermined decades of progress in fighting diseases like measles, HIV and polio.
Last week, in an interview with The Times magazine, Gates said that Mr. Musk had trashed USAID, a direct reference to comments Musk made in February in X, where he gloated about cuts at the agency.
Gates questioned whether Elon Musk would honor his commitment, known as the Giving Pledge — a non-binding commitment to give at least half of his fortune to charity that Mr. Musk signed in 2012.
"He could become a great philanthropist, but right now the richest man in the world is involved in the deaths of the poorest children in the world," the former richest man in the world gave his assessment of Musk's political activities.
In an interview with The Financial Times, Gates used even more harsh language. "The picture of the richest man in the world killing the poorest children in the world is not very pleasant," he said.
White House spokesman Harrison Fields stood up for Musk.
"Elon Musk is a patriot working to fulfill President Trump's mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse. Congressmen should recognize the selfless efforts of America's most innovative entrepreneur, who dedicates his time to supporting American taxpayers and holding Washington accountable to the people of this great nation," the statement said.
It recently became known that the Tesla board of directors is looking for a replacement for Elon Musk.
