This was reported by the Google Threat Intelligence Group team.
According to Google, Videostrong made money from this scheme by giving other cybercriminals access to the devices. So they could control them remotely and use the owners' home internet for their own purposes. The investigation also revealed that the manufacturer had been developing this scheme for years, modifying the malware to make it harder to detect.
So Google, together with Japanese law enforcement and cybersecurity companies, shut down the servers that the criminals were using to control the infected devices. The attackers then lost access to at least 10 million additional infected devices, including Android consoles, karaoke systems, and medical equipment.
However, the virus still remains on infected consoles. Even if the malware is removed, it can automatically recover from the system partition of the firmware. Therefore, to clean the device, a new clean firmware is required. If it is not available, owners of infected consoles are advised to disconnect them from the Internet and stop using them.
Following this incident, Google also stepped up its scrutiny of Android TV devices, as it was discovered that Videostrong had embedded a hidden access mechanism into the set-top box firmware that allowed the device to install additional malware after it was launched. This allowed the manufacturer to bypass Google's security checks.
Earlier, dev.ua reported that Google sued 25 individuals and organizations from China over the BADBOX 2.0 botnet, which infected over 10 million devices. Among them were set-top boxes, car multimedia systems, and digital photo frames.
