As Bloomberg reports, citing its sources, the UK Ministry of Defense intends to accelerate the development process as much as possible in order to transfer weapons to Ukraine as early as 2027.
Before receiving contracts to produce missiles, defense companies participating in the program, called Nightfall, must successfully conduct tests.
It was expected that the preliminary contracts would be signed by March, but, as sources told the publication, the signing was delayed by about two months.
According to them, test launches should begin within 12 months, and deliveries should begin at the end of 2027.
The publication emphasizes that the program serves a dual purpose: to ensure supplies to Ukraine and at the same time expand Europe’s own defense potential.
According to preliminary information, the missile’s characteristics may include a flight range of up to 500 kilometers, a warhead weighing 200 kilograms, and a maximum cost of up to 800,000 pounds.
The weapon must also be capable of being launched from a range of vehicles and operating on battlefields with electromagnetic interference.
In addition, as dev.ua wrote, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the joining of new European partners to the FREYJA project, which aims to create an air defense system to shoot down enemy ballistic missiles.
