ByteDance has a Doubao chatbot similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The lawsuit, filed in the Beijing District Court, is based on allegations that former intern Tian Keiyu deliberately tampered with the code for the training tasks for the AI model. Several Chinese media reported that ByteDance is demanding 8 million yuan (about $1.1 million) and a public apology.
ByteDance said last month that it fired Tian in August and that he was an intern on the technology team but not working in the artificial intelligence lab. The company added that his social media profile contained inaccuracies. Tian’s LinkedIn profile states that he has been a research intern in ByteDance’s venture capital team and artificial intelligence lab since 2021.
Last month, ByteDance said reports that a former intern damaged about 8,000 custom GPU chips and caused millions of dollars in damage were exaggerated.
Earlier it became known that 41-year-old Zhang Yiming, the founder and chief executive officer of ByteDance, became the richest person in China with a fortune of $49.3 billion.
At the end of the summer, ByteDance announced that it had developed its own AI model for generating video from text — another competitor to Sora, which OpenAI introduced in February of this year.
