The mobile app CatchCat from developer santotech has been released on Google Play. It combines augmented reality and machine learning technologies to gamify user interactions with animals. The project allows you to recognize cats you meet in real life, create their trading cards, and prepare for virtual competitions.
The CatchCat gameplay is built on a cycle of interaction with real-world objects. Having spotted a cat, the user activates the smartphone camera, which uses interactive overlays to detect the object in the frame. The application allows you to capture stray animals, pets, as well as images of cats from digital screens (including cat memes).
The collection process is implemented in the format of a mini-game, where the user needs to direct a virtual 3D can of food towards an object. After that, an integrated algorithm determines the breed of the animal and generates its 3D model for a personal library. Each model receives a set of combat characteristics, a rarity level, a name and a card with a source photo.
As users explore the world map, they gain experience points (XP) and level up, which increases their chances of finding high-rarity models. An interactive map displays the locations of cats that have been caught by other users near the player’s current GPS location. If they get close enough to such a spawn marker, the player has the opportunity to catch the cat inside a special virtual 3D room.

The game’s website states that CatchCat uses Edge AI technology — artificial intelligence processing directly on the device. For real-time object recognition and breed classification, YOLO and SSD neural network models are integrated.
All calculations, image analysis, and duplicate identification occur locally on the smartphone’s processor. User images are not sent to third-party servers, ensuring the confidentiality of personal data.
The collection is synchronized with the cloud via the Convex platform after the device is connected to the Internet, allowing the application to work offline.
A free version of CatchCat is available for Android on the Google Play Store, with an iOS version in development. Monetization involves a free base game with the option to purchase a CatCatch Pro subscription, which speeds up the accumulation of game resources and unlocks additional features.
CatchCat is currently temporarily unable to catch or add new cats due to the game’s servers being overwhelmed. However, players can catch other players' cats on the world map.
In future updates, the developers plan to launch the PvP mode Alley Clash. In it, digitized cat models will function as battle cards with individual elements, characteristics, and bonuses from virtual food types.
