When ChatGPT users search for products, the chatbot now:
OpenAI says that users can ask super-specific questions in natural language and get personalized results, writes TechCrunch.
To start, the company is experimenting with categories such as fashion, beauty, home goods, and electronics.
OpenAI is launching this feature in GPT-4o (the default AI model for ChatGPT) for ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Free users worldwide. Even this feature will be available without registration.
OpenAI says it determines the search results in ChatGPT itself, and also assures that advertising is not part of this update. Shopping results will be based on structured metadata from third parties, such as prices, product descriptions, and reviews.
The company claims that it will not profit from purchases made through ChatGPT searches.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was opposed to advertising on ChatGPT, but in a recent interview with Stratechery’s Ben Thompson, he changed his stance somewhat. He said he’s open to “flavorful” advertising, in which OpenAI collects an affiliate commission for purchases made through ChatGPT but doesn’t sell priority placement in their results.
OpenAI plans to integrate its memory feature with purchases for Pro and Plus users soon, meaning ChatGPT will reference a user's previous chats to provide highly personalized product recommendations.
The company previously updated ChatGPT to allow it to reference memories when searching the web in a broad sense. However, these memory features will not be available to users in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
