Man filmed his wife's infidelity on a robot vacuum cleaner, won the case, but ended up behind bars
A real legal drama has erupted in Taiwan: a man caught his wife cheating with a robot vacuum cleaner and won compensation, but was sentenced to real prison for violating her privacy.
A real legal drama has erupted in Taiwan: a man caught his wife cheating with a robot vacuum cleaner and won compensation, but was sentenced to real prison for violating her privacy.
The couple got married in 2021. The man's suspicions of his wife's infidelity arose during a vacation at the dacha in 2023, when he found someone else's used toothbrush in the bathroom, and on the parking lot cameras he saw a stranger giving his wife a lift, writes Tom's Hardware.
Three months later, while trying to contact his wife via the robot vacuum cleaner's mobile app, he accidentally turned on the device's camera and saw a video on the screen: his wife undressing, changing clothes, and getting into bed with the same man. The man recorded the entire incident and used the video as key evidence in court.
Since adultery is not a criminal offense under Taiwanese law but violates the marriage contract, the plaintiff sought NT$2 million ($63,000). The court admitted the video evidence and awarded him NT$500,000 ($19,000) in moral damages.
The wife immediately filed a counterclaim for illegal filming and invasion of privacy. The husband argued that if the court accepted the video as evidence, it was legal. However, the judges decided otherwise: the protection of the constitutional right to privacy is higher than the observance of marital duties.
For secretly recording intimate life without consent, the court sentenced the man to 5 months in prison and a fine of 150,000 Taiwanese dollars ($4,700) — almost 30% of the compensation he won.
As a result, an attempt at a quick exposure through covert filming resulted not in a financial victory for the plaintiff, but in a real prison sentence and a criminal record.
