On September 26, Carly Michelle Geller of Bonita Springs posted a message to the Claude chatbot threatening to attack the county sheriff's office. During her arrest, she explained that she viewed the service as a digital diary and shared her thoughts with it, TechSpot reports .
Claude's security systems automatically flagged the threatening text and forwarded it to a human moderator for review. Assessing the situation as a real threat of mass violence, the company employee reported it to the police.
Anthropic representatives noted that the company's privacy policy allows the transfer of users' personal data to law enforcement agencies in emergency situations - in particular, to prevent a threat to life or serious bodily harm.
Officers quickly identified Geller and arrested her at her residence without resisting arrest. The case is currently being investigated by a detective with the Lee County Sheriff's Office's Intelligence Division.
The woman is charged with making written threats of violence. According to Florida Code Section 836.10, sending or posting electronic messages threatening to commit murder, mass shootings, or acts of terrorism is a second-degree felony if the message is created in a manner that is intended to be viewed by others.
