OpenAI has released a separate AI assistant app for programmers, Codex, in the Windows app store.
The ChatGPT developers released Codex in May of last year. The AI can write code in a wide range of programming languages, including JavaScript, Python, Go, Perl, PHP, Ruby, Swift, and Shell.
In February 2026, OpenAI launched a standalone Codex app for macOS, adding a feature that allows users to work with multiple AI agents in parallel. Users can distribute tasks between them, track progress, and return to long-running projects without losing context.
Now Windows will receive the same update, as OpenAI has launched a separate Codex program for Microsoft’s operating system.
The Codex app is now on Windows.

The Windows program also allows multiple AI agents to coordinate on a single task. It also supports automation for repetitive tasks, such as testing for errors.
To help users get started, the Codex includes a dedicated «Skills» section. Skills bring together instructions, resources, and scripts that the software can use to connect agents to specific tools and workflows.
Codex is available to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. Session history is saved to your OpenAI account, so you can start programming on a Mac and then switch to Windows to continue.
