Today, Perplexity launched its first artificial intelligence web browser called Comet.
Comet will initially be available to subscribers of the Max plan for $200 per month, as well as a small group of invitees who have registered on a waiting list, writes TechCrunch.
Comet's main feature is its Perplexity AI search engine, which comes pre-installed and configured by default. This makes the company's core product — AI-generated search results summaries — the main and primary.
Users also get access to Comet Assistant, a new AI agent from Perplexity that runs in a web browser and automates routine tasks.
Perplexity says the assistant can summarize emails and calendar events, manage tabs, and navigate web pages on behalf of users.
Users can access Comet Assistant by opening an assistant screen on any web page, which allows the AI agent to see what is on the page and answer questions about it.
Comet is entering a crowded arena. While Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari hold the majority of the market, The Browser Company launched an AI-powered browser called Dia in June that appears to offer many of the same features as Comet. OpenAI is also reportedly considering launching its own browser to compete with Google, and even hired several key members of Google Chrome’s development team last year.
The new web browser could gain a head start in the browser wars if a significant portion of Perplexity’s users sign up for the product. The startup recently said it had received 780 million queries in May 2025, and that the company’s search products are growing by more than 20% each month.
