This is reported by TechCrunch, citing sources from the New York Times.
Calibri was adopted by US government agencies in 2023 under the Joe Biden administration. It was chosen by the then-DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) department, which was later disbanded by Marco Rubio as part of President Donald Trump’s fight against inclusivity.
The font was chosen to make documents easier to read for people with visual impairments, as it did not contain decorative curls or lines at the ends of the letters. With sharper lines and slightly wider spacing between letters, such fonts are considered more accessible to people with problems ranging from dyslexia to low vision.
In an internal letter to officials, Rubio allegedly stated that Times New Roman would «restore decency and professionalism» to documents. Instead, Calibri contributed to the «degradation» of official State Department correspondence.
