Previously, Discord's file size limit prevented users from sending short videos or high-resolution screenshots due to the 10MB limit. This forced users to use compression tools or third-party file sharing services just to drop links into the chat, Neowin writes .
But you won't have to do that anymore, because the messenger has increased the limit from 10 MB to 20 MB for users without a Nitro subscription.
Recall that in 2023, Discord raised the limit from 8 MB to 25 MB, but about a year and a half later, it cut it back to 10 MB. This reduction was explained by infrastructure limitations and the increasing costs of cloud data management, as well as internal metrics that showed that most users were uploading files smaller than 10 MB.
The update also changes how Discord checks file sizes on mobile devices. Previously, mobile uploads could be compressed before Discord could determine if they were within the allowed limit. Now, the file size is checked before compression, just like on the desktop version. This is to make the limits work more predictably across platforms.
Discord says that sharing files on desktop and iOS has become much more convenient. However, Android users may still encounter limitations due to the larger initial file size on their devices.
This update applies to free users only and does not change the terms for paid subscriptions. For Nitro Basic accounts, the limit remains at 50 MB per file, while full Nitro subscribers can continue to upload up to 500 MB.
