"Previously, a student could get a job at an IT outsourcing company in their second year, start earning more than their parents, and think they had grabbed God by the beard. Now the situation has changed." What the UCU rector says about systemic problems in engineering education
UCU Rector Taras Dobko stated that among the most popular bachelor’s programs today are computer science, IT and decision analytics, as well as robotics.
UCU Rector Taras Dobko stated that among the most popular bachelor’s programs today are computer science, IT and decision analytics, as well as robotics.
As he explained in an interview with DOU, 477 first-year students joined the Ukrainian Catholic University this year, and over 1,600 applications were submitted in total.
At the same time, according to Taras Dobko, a systemic problem of Ukrainian education is the destruction of the very culture of engineering sciences and the need for its revival.
«During Soviet times, the engineering school in Ukraine was very powerful — numerous design bureaus, production facilities, factories. And then an interesting turn happened: the children of Soviet engineers went to develop the IT industry. As a result, we have a kind of paradox. We have many strong programmers, which is certainly a success for the IT sphere. At the same time, we have actually lost an entire generation from the engineering process,» Dobko expressed his opinion.
Thus, as he claims, Ukraine has almost lost the achievements of the old school, in particular the understanding of how to bring a certain idea to «hardware», that is, to a working solution.
«All this needs to be rebuilt virtually from scratch. And, in my opinion, it’s worth starting with changes in the education system,» he noted.
The Rector of UCU believes that engineering education should be provided with a focus on project work and learning through real-world problems from the first year.
In turn, young specialists should strive not just to become ordinary IT professionals, but to deepen their engineering knowledge.
«When we opened the computer science program in 2016, we understood that we were not interested in training ordinary junior developers for outsourcing. We set ourselves the task of having our students master complex, science-intensive things, such as machine learning. So that they would go to work in product companies, and ideally, build their own startups, create jobs,» says Dobko.
According to Dobko, current trends in the labor market speak for themselves.
«At that time, a student could simply get a job at an IT outsourcing company in his second year, start earning more than his parents, and think that he had grabbed God by the beard. And as a result, it was too early to relax, stop developing, and eventually lose competitiveness. Now the situation has changed, it has become much more difficult to enter IT. Our mission is all the more important to instill in young IT professionals a thirst for learning and constant improvement,» he said.
As dev.ua reported, UCU, together with the startup Haiqu, was to hold the fourth school on quantum machine learning.
Так, інженери вже не потрібні. Бо промисловості немає.
А коли, в які роки таки часи були? Бо коли я був студентом 1996-2002 такої можливості хапати бога за бороду не було 😆
