According to the official Meta blog, the feature is already rolling out on Android and iOS and will eventually be available on Messenger. One passkey will work for both apps. The technology should make logging in faster and more secure, especially given phishing attacks and password theft.
A Passkey is a digital ID that verifies your identity through biometrics or a PIN and is stored only on your smartphone. Unlike passwords or SMS codes, these keys are not transmitted online, cannot be stolen or picked up, and do not require you to remember them.
Meta assures that it does not see or store biometric data, it remains only on the device. Authorization occurs locally, so even if the server is compromised, your key will remain inaccessible to third parties.
In the future, passkeys can also be used to automatically enter payment details in Meta Pay and access encrypted backups of messages in Messenger.
You can set up your key in the Accounts Center section of Facebook settings. The system may also prompt you to do so when you log in to your account.
Passkey is a solution based on the open FIDO standard, already used by Google, Apple, and other major technology companies. Meta is a member of the FIDO Alliance, which is advancing passwordless authentication worldwide.
