The largest French car manufacturer Renault has signed an agreement with the French defense company Turgis Gaillard to produce drones for the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
Renault said it would work with Turgis Gaillard to produce drones at two of its plants, but declined to comment on the value of the contract or the number of drones to be produced. The FT reports that the deal has the backing of the French Ministry of Defense.
«We were approached because of our production and creative industrial experience. This project is ongoing and is managed by the Ministry of Defense. We confirm our participation in this project at the request of the state,» Renault Director Fabrice Kamboliv said on Tuesday.
The contract comes after the French government in June asked automotive and defense companies to collaborate on drone production. Renault previously produced military equipment, including tanks used in World Wars I and II.
Turgis Gaillard is a French defense company founded in 2011, with about 400 employees and revenues of €80 million. Its products include the 20-meter AAROK drone, which can carry almost three tons of fuel, weapons or equipment. The company previously signed an agreement with the Ukrainian company Antonov to jointly produce a smaller and cheaper version of the Aarok MALE drone.
