"Firewood from Facebook cost 7,000 UAH — and not a single log": cyberpolice promote a classic scheme

The Vyshhorod District Court of Kyiv Region has issued a ruling on temporary access to bank documents in a case that could become a textbook on how not to buy firewood online.

The plot is as simple as three hryvnias

A person saw an ad for firewood on Facebook. Called. Made an agreement. Transferred 7,000 UAH. There is no firewood. There is no seller. There is only a card number and a feeling of cold, which now has a completely different meaning.

How it worked

The scheme is classic for the Ukrainian Facebook marketplace: an ad, then a call, then «transfer in advance,» and then silence. The money went through one card, then through another, and ended up somewhere with an unknown account holder at one of the major banks.

Where are the cyber police?

It was the Cyber Police Department that tracked the money’s route through the payment platform and established the final card. Then came the standard procedure: a petition to the court, a ruling on access to banking secrecy, and the bank was obliged to hand over everything — from the photo taken when issuing the card to the IP addresses of the Internet banking logins.

Morality

If someone sells firewood on Facebook and asks for prepayment, it’s either ghost firewood or a very expensive lesson in digital literacy. The cyber police will find it later, but the firewood will never be returned.
