Europol dismantles Russian hacking group responsible for cyberattacks on critical infrastructure in the EU and Ukraine
Law enforcement officers from 12 countries have successfully taken down over 100 servers and issued arrest warrants for key figures in the Russian hacker group NoName057(16), which has been carrying out DDoS attacks on critical infrastructure and government institutions around the world since the start of a full-scale invasion.
Law enforcement officers from 12 countries have successfully taken down over 100 servers and issued arrest warrants for key figures in the Russian hacker group NoName057(16), which has been carrying out DDoS attacks on critical infrastructure and government institutions around the world since the start of a full-scale invasion.
On July 15, law enforcement officers in eight countries successfully took down more than 100 of the group’s servers, according to Eurojust’s official website. Seven international arrest warrants were issued as part of the operation, six of which came from Germany and concern suspects based in Russia. Two individuals are accused of being the main organizers of NoName057’s activities(16).
The NoName057(16) group is known for its support for Russian aggression and anti-Western sentiment. Their attacks, which consisted of overloading websites with traffic, were directed against key sites in Germany (about 230 organizations), Sweden, Switzerland (during speeches by the Ukrainian president and the Peace Summit), and the Netherlands (during a NATO summit).
For their operations, the hackers mobilized about 4,000 users who downloaded malware to participate in the attacks, and also used their own botnet with hundreds of servers.
The success of the operation was made possible by the close cooperation of Europol, which coordinated the exchange of information and provided analytical support, and Eurojust, which coordinated judicial requests. In addition to blocking the servers, the authorities also informed the group's 1,100 supporters and 17 administrators of the measures taken and the criminal liability for their actions.
This is not the first time that NoName057(16) has been investigated. Three members of the group were previously arrested for cyberattacks on Spain and other NATO countries.
dev.ua has already talked about the largest Russian hacker groups, including NoName057(16), and what their attacks in Ukraine are aimed at.
