Getty Images Holdings Inc. has filed for bankruptcy protection after reaching a restructuring agreement that will allow it to raise new financing, pay down debt and turn the visual content service into a private company.

This was reported by Reuters, citing a statement from the company and materials filed with the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
Getty Images has filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, listing assets and liabilities in the range of $1 billion to $10 billion in court documents. The company took this step due to its heavy debt load and a market transformation caused by the popularity of tools for generating images using artificial intelligence.
The financial restructuring involves the injection of up to $533 million in new capital. The main investors are members of the Getty family and affiliates of Koch Equity Development (in particular, Koch will provide up to $143 million to support the process itself). Upon completion of the reorganization, these parties will receive 100% of the shares of Getty Images.
The filing was preceded by lengthy negotiations. In early September 2026, the company took advantage of a 30-day grace period after deciding to defer interest payments on unsecured notes in order to agree on restructuring terms with creditors.
Getty Images assured that the procedure will not stop operations and will not affect content creators, partners, clients or employees. The restructuring process is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Getty Images previously planned to merge with its main competitor Shutterstock, but the deal fell through due to high debt and increasing competition from AI image generators.
