Apple's "Hide My Email" feature may actually be hiding nothing
Apple's Hide My Email feature may not be completely private. The tool allows iCloud+ subscribers to create anonymous email addresses instead of providing their own contact information. It's typically used as a workaround to avoid spam and data trackers, or simply to protect personal information from future leaks. However, a vulnerability has been discovered in the feature that allows hackers to link users' real email contacts to those created by Apple.
The problem was discovered by the EasyOptOuts team. According to the company's CEO Tyler Murphy, they contacted Apple about the vulnerability and how to reproduce it a year ago. He corresponded with the company by email, and Apple responded at various times that it was either investigating the problem or that a solution was already in development or even implemented, Engadget reports .
However, Murphy and 404 Media journalist Joseph Cox were able to exploit the vulnerability recently. The exact details of the exploit are not being disclosed due to the potential risk to Apple users.
"We don't know why this hasn't been fixed yet, but we don't think it's worth waiting any longer. Users of the Hide My Email feature have a right to know that attackers can likely figure out their real email addresses," Murphy said.
He also added: “We don’t know the full extent of the problem, but in our limited testing with volunteers, absolutely 100 percent of addresses created through Hide My Email were vulnerable.”
