Gemini on Android finally learned to recognize music: now it does it through Google's Song Search
After months of criticism, Google has added music recognition to its Gemini app on Android. It doesn't work natively, but rather through a redirect to the built-in Google Search interface, but it's much more convenient than before.
After months of criticism, Google has added music recognition to its Gemini app on Android. It doesn't work natively, but rather through a redirect to the built-in Google Search interface, but it's much more convenient than before.
According to 9to5Google, back in April, the Gemini team couldn't answer a query like "what song is this" and only responded with advice to use a separate app for music recognition. Meanwhile, Google Assistant, which is still available, immediately launched recognition built-in. But recently, the situation has changed.
Gemini on Android now integrates with Song Search, which opens a familiar full-screen interface with an animated sphere that “listens” to the sounds around you. If there’s a match, the result opens in Google Search. There’s also a “Close” button on the screen to abort the recognition.
The feature doesn't work built into the Gemini interface itself, but rather by opening a separate screen. However, it's a lot better than the complete lack of support for music requests as it was before. Android users can now once again simply say a command out loud and quickly find out what's playing nearby.
Unfortunately, this feature is still not available on iOS: the “what song is this” command does not activate Song Search and does not open the desired interface.
Gemini functionality complaints
After the announced gradual rollout of Google Assistant by the end of 2025, many Android users complained about Gemini's functionality as a poor replacement. One of the losses was the music recognition feature. Its return, even in this workaround, improves the user experience and demonstrates that Google is listening to audience feedback, although it is not in a hurry with full integration.
Recall that earlier in our feed, we published an article about how Google is testing a new artificial intelligence feature, which is based on the latest Gemini model and can generate quick audio reviews in dialogue formats for some user search queries.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
