Free and with local AI: Ukrainian IT specialist developed a new open-source Git client Gitember

Ukrainian Solution Architect Igor Azarny has developed an open Git client. Gitember helps perform not only routine version control operations, but also covers needs that usually force developers to open several tools: history search, diff, merge, work with multiple repositories, and code review.

The project was released in March of this year. Today, Igor Azarnyi introduced Gitember 3.5 on Reddit.

Managing multiple repositories (Workspace)

Developing projects with a microservice architecture often requires working with many independent repositories for frontend, backend, and related services simultaneously, which creates unnecessary workload due to constant switching between them.

Gitember solves this problem with its Workspace feature, which brings together standalone repositories into a single dashboard. This allows you to track the status of all your projects in one window without having to merge them into a monorepo or use submodules.

Advanced search in Git history (Extended Search)

One of Gitember's most powerful features is its advanced history search, which allows you to index a selected portion of the repository and perform deep searches directly on the contents of historical files. This allows developers to track not only the commit that made the change, but also the exact time and context of the existence of a particular text or configuration value, with analysis support spanning from regular code to documents, CAD files, archives, and audio formats.

Built-in Diff and Merge tools

Gitember includes a full-featured code comparison and merging toolkit, eliminating the need to install third-party utilities. The tool provides a visual side-by-side diff for comparing files or branches and a convenient visual three-way merge for resolving conflicts, and the file and directory comparison functions can be run standalone as a separate application.

Confidential AI functions (Local AI)

All AI capabilities in Gitember are experimental and work exclusively on an opt-in basis, i.e. they require conscious activation by the user. The main advantage of this approach is complete data privacy: the tool operates on the basis of local AI models with the ability to independently select the desired model, thanks to which no information from your repository is sent to cloud services.

Currently, local AI in Gitember provides three main scenarios for improving security and ease of development. In particular, the Secret detector function scans staged files before committing, detecting accidentally forgotten passwords, API keys, tokens, and private keys, while additional AI capabilities automatically generate meaningful commit messages and describe differences between branches.

For those who want to compare Gitember's capabilities with other Git clients, a detailed comparison is available on the project's official website .
