Google has added the ability for paid users of its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant to turn their photos into short video clips.
Google AI Ultra and Pro users will be able to use the feature through the web version of Gemini starting Thursday, the company said in a statement. The tool will roll out to the Gemini mobile app within a week, Bloomberg reports .
The new feature allows users to create 8-second clips with audio based on a photo, as well as any text description of the scene that they include in the tooltip field. The videos will be created as a 720p MP4 file in 16:9 aspect ratio.
Bloomberg reporters tested the feature and found some flaws. When uploading personal photos and asking the tool to create a video of a person talking, the output data changed facial features and sometimes even race.
While Gemini successfully responded to prompts to create videos of plants moving in the wind or a cat based on static images, it couldn't handle more complex prompts, such as creating a photo of a person breakdancing. Instead, it created a video of a person waving at the camera.
The company responded that it would continue to improve the model in future updates.
