Google has launched a new film and television initiative called 100 Zeros in partnership with Range Media Partners, Business Insider reports . It's a multi-year project that involves financing or producing films and series, both fiction and documentary.
The initiative will promote products like Immersive View, spatial tools that combine the real and virtual worlds, and AI. Google also doesn't mind characters in movies using Android instead of iPhones — but without intrusive product placement.
The company says directly: through pop culture, they want to change young people's attitudes towards Google and technology in general.
“We want to collaborate with Hollywood in a meaningful and productive way, exploring the potential of technology through storytelling,” Google says.
100 Zeros has already funded the marketing of Neon's indie horror film Cuckoo. The 100 Zeros initiative's logo was in the credits, but without any media exposure.
In a new phase, Google and Range announced AI On Screen, a series of short films about artificial intelligence, two of which could be developed into feature films. One of the films, Sweetwater, tells the story of AI helping the film's protagonist deal with his mother's inheritance.
Despite Google owning YouTube, 100 Zeros doesn't aim to create content for YouTube. They plan to sell projects to major studios and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon.
