Google has begun rolling out a new feature that lets users change their primary @gmail.com address without creating a new account. This is the first time in the service’s 22-year history that a user can change their email address without losing their emails, files, and settings.
How the function works
The old address automatically becomes an alias, and emails will continue to be sent to it. User data (correspondence, Drive files, photos, subscriptions) will remain intact. Changes can be made no more than once every 12 months, and a maximum of three times in total.
After changing, the old address cannot be used to create a new account for 12 months.
Where to activate
To activate the feature, you need to open your Google account settings → Personal information → Email.
Then select the «Change Email Address» option and follow the instructions .
Previously, Gmail didn’t allow you to change your primary address, which was a problem for users with long-term or non-professional addresses. Now, users get the flexibility and convenience of keeping all of their account information.
Function nowis gradually rolling out to different regions, so not all users may see it immediately.
