According to Opal’s developers, users only need to enter a description of the app they want to create and the tool will use various Google models to do so. It also allows you to modify existing apps in the gallery.
«Opal is a great tool for accelerating the prototyping of AI ideas and workflows, demonstrating proof of concept with a functional app, building custom AI apps to improve productivity at work, and much more,» Google says.
Once the app is ready, users can go to the editor panel to see a visual workflow of input, output, and generation. Opal allows you to click on each step in the workflow to see a tooltip that defines the process and edit it if necessary. You can also add steps manually from the Opal toolbar.
The tool also allows users to publish their new apps online and share the link with others so they can test them using their own Google accounts.
Google’s AI Studio already lets developers build apps using prompts, but Opal’s visual workflow suggests the company is likely looking to reach a broader audience, TechCrunch notes. The company joins a long list of competitors, including Canva, Figma, and Replit, that are building tools to encourage non-technical people to prototype apps without having to code.
Opal is currently available in public beta for the US only.
