Google now requires Android developers to verify their identity or they will lose the ability to upload apps
Starting April 1, Google began rolling out developer verification in both the new Android Developer Console and the Play Console.
Starting April 1, Google began rolling out developer verification in both the new Android Developer Console and the Play Console.
In August 2025, Google announced its intention to restrict the download of applications from third-party sources on Android devices, citing the decision as a way to combat malware that attackers disguise as regular programs, writes Cybernews.
“Our recent analysis found that third-party sources are 90 times more likely to deliver malware than Google Play, so as an additional security measure, we’re implementing Android developer verification. This will help prevent attackers from hiding behind anonymity to repeatedly spread threats,” said Matthew Forsyth, Director of Product Management and Android App Security at Google.
By September 2026, all developers must register to retain the ability to sideload apps. Those who distribute software exclusively outside of the Play Store must create an account in the Android Developer Console. Developers who offer their apps through the official Google store should check the status of their account in the Play Console.
While Google implements verification tools, the user experience when downloading apps (including sideloading) will remain the same for the rest of this year. The updated user-side protections will first be rolled out in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand this September, and will be available globally in 2027.
Users who want to install applications from unverified developers will have to activate a special advanced mode.
To do this, users will need to enable Developer Mode by tapping the build number 7 times in the About Phone settings menu. After that, you need to go to Settings > System > Developer Options and find the Allow Unverified Packages option.
Next, you need to enter your PIN or password, reboot your device, and wait 24 hours. Finally, the user must return to the “Allow Unverified Packages” menu and finally enable sideloading.
