Google will allow American schools to ban AI, but with it, students will lose access to regular search
Google has decided to give schools more control over their use of artificial intelligence. Starting in 2027, school administrators will be able to decide for themselves whether to allow students to use AI through their school Google accounts. But if a school wants to completely abandon AI, students will also lose access to regular Google searches.
Google has decided to give schools more control over their use of artificial intelligence. Starting in 2027, school administrators will be able to decide for themselves whether to allow students to use AI through their school Google accounts. But if a school wants to completely abandon AI, students will also lose access to regular Google searches.
The new rules will apply to school accounts for students from elementary to high school. AI tools will be disabled by default, so administrators will be able to decide for themselves which ones to open up to them.
But Google has so tightly integrated regular search with AI features that schools can no longer use one without the other. So leaving regular Google Search for students but removing AI reviews from it won't work. If the administration completely blocks AI, instead of search results, students will see a message that the service is unavailable.
This can be a problem for teachers. They may not want their children to receive ready-made answers from AI when doing homework, but students may need a search engine to work with sources and learning materials.
Google continues to introduce AI into education. The company is launching Guided Learning in schools, a tool that should work as a personal tutor. It will be able to help students understand tasks step by step. Thus, Google is trying to respond to concerns that AI may interfere with the development of independent and critical thinking in schoolchildren.
Earlier, dev.ua wrote that Google introduced new AI tools for learning in Gemini and its search engine. Among them are interactive 3D simulations, personalized tests, and other features designed to help students understand complex topics.
