Grok generates thousands of deepfakes every hour — study

As Bloomberg reports , social media researcher Genevieve Oh analyzed the platform's activity over the course of 24 hours (January 5–6) and found that the Grok chatbot generated about 6,700 sexually explicit images every hour.
In comparison, the five other most popular sites with similar functionality average just 79 images per hour. Overall, the study found that 85% of all visual content created by Grok is sexualized.
Lawyer Carrie Goldberg emphasizes that the world has never encountered a technology that makes it so easy to create pornography, as the tool is free, has no strict filters, and instantly distributes content on social media.
Unlike competitors (OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic), which block the creation of such content at the code level, Grok from xAI works almost without restrictions.
Elon Musk's position remains unchanged, he proposes to punish users who violate the law, rather than restrict the bot's capabilities. However, as experts note, in practice the protection mechanisms do not work.
Journalists cite the example of 23-year-old student Maddie. Unknown people used Grok to rework her ordinary photo from a bar. First, she was “dressed” in a bikini, and then in even more revealing underwear. When the girl complained to X support, she was told that “no violations of the rules were found,” and the photos remained on the site.
Sometimes the Grok bot itself "apologizes" to victims in the comments and promises to remove the fakes, but the images still remain available, and the generation of new ones continues.
Recall that at the beginning of the year, a scandal erupted around the AI assistant after users began massively sharing screenshots where Grok carried out requests to edit uploaded photos, actually nudizing people in the pictures or adding revealing clothing to them.
