OpenAI is building its own humanoid robot. Altman promises the first demo in 2027

OpenAI wants to show the first demo of its own humanoid robot in 2027. The company is already recruiting engineers who will work on its motors, drives, electronics, and preparation for mass production.
The company's CEO Sam Altman said this in an interview with Fortune Magazine.
"In 2027, we'll have a cool demo — really cool. I don't think robots will be walking the streets for a few years after that, but we'll have something spectacular," Altman said.
There are currently 26 open positions in Robotics on the company's career site. OpenAI is looking for engineers to work on electronics, firmware, control systems, sensors, machine learning, and prototyping. There are also openings to develop electric motors, gears, and other components that directly drive the robot's motion.
Altman previously explained why the company is interested in the humanoid form. The world is already built for humans: doors, stairs, cars, keyboards, kitchens, and factory equipment are designed for a body with two arms and two legs. Therefore, working in human form is easier to “fit” into the world around you. However, in his opinion, creating an AI brain intelligent enough to control the body and interact normally with the physical world will be difficult.
In his essay The Gentle Singularity, Altman suggested the following sequence: in 2025, AI agents begin to perform real intellectual work, in 2026, AI helps make new scientific discoveries, and 2027 could be the year of robots entering the physical world.
In the longer term, he described a scenario where the first million humanoid robots would still be produced by humans in the traditional way. But then the robots themselves would be able to work in factories, transport goods, extract resources, and help create the next generation of machines.
Previously, dev.ua wrote that in early 2025, OpenAI filed a trademark application, which mentioned “user-programmable” humanoid robots with learning and communication functions among potential products.
