Instagram generates clickbait SEO headlines for Google without users' consent
Instagram automatically adds special SEO titles and descriptions to users' posts that are only visible in Google search results. Often, these texts are created by AI, sometimes with errors, and the authors only find out about them after they’ve been published.
Instagram automatically adds special SEO titles and descriptions to users' posts that are only visible in Google search results. Often, these texts are created by AI, sometimes with errors, and the authors only find out about them after they’ve been published.
According to Engadget, the problem was first reported by journalists at 404 Media and the content creators themselves. They noticed that their posts on Google had completely different, «clickbait» titles and descriptions that they did not write. This text was hidden in the page code in the <title> tags and in the descriptions for search engines, but was not displayed inside Instagram itself.
The article gives a few illustrative examples. An Engadget journalist’s post about the board game Bloomhunter received a Google search description that called the game Floramino and described it as «a cozy gardening puzzler.» In fact, Floramino is a separate video game on Steam, and is not related to the article. In another case, a short video by writer Jeff Vandermeer with a rabbit and a banana became a «sensational story» about favorite fruit snacks for pets.
Cosplayers have noticed a similar situation. They say that under generative headlines, their posts look as if they were being advertised by a soulless SEO copywriter. The main complaint: the algorithm attributes wording to authors that they would never use, and can distort the image or meaning of the content.
Meta admitted to Engadget that it «recently started using AI to generate captions for posts that appear in search results.» The company says this is to «help people better understand what content they’re seeing.» Users can opt out of indexing, but then Instagram stops showing their posts in search altogether, rather than simply disabling auto-generated captions. Meta also cautions that, as with other AI-powered content, these captions «may not be 100 percent accurate.»
This poses several risks for the content creator ecosystem. First, authors effectively become «SEO fillers» for Instagram, without even knowing that the platform is talking to Google on their behalf. Second, AI errors can damage reputations: inaccurate product descriptions, exaggerated promises, or strange wording in search results are associated with the author of the post, not with the Meta algorithm.
Meta doesn’t yet offer users any fine-tuning of this mechanism. There’s only a choice between opting out of indexing altogether and automatically generated headlines. For businesses, bloggers, and media outlets that depend on Google traffic, this poses a dilemma: either put up with clickbait AI support or become less visible in search.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how Meta is changing the advertising format for Facebook and Instagram users in the EU. Starting in January 2026, people will be able to either leave fully personalized advertising or choose an option with minimal targeting.
