Instagram is launching its own awards program: 25 winners will be chosen.
The winners will receive rings designed by renowned fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner. They may have some value, as there is no cash prize for this recognition. In addition, the winners will receive a digital copy of the ring, which they can post on their Instagram profile and stories, writes Engadget.
Featured creators will also be able to customize the background color of their profiles, creating a unique gradient. This customization is “something we’ve really never done before,” says Eva Chen, head of fashion partnerships at Instagram. Myspace has been allowing people to do this for over 20 years, and Friendster even earlier.
Instagram has three billion monthly active users, and only 25 people get the aforementioned ring. Judges will whittle the list down to thousands, then hundreds, before determining the winners. Those judges include the platform’s CEO Adam Mosseri, as well as the likes of Spike Lee and actress Yari Shahidi.
There are no official categories like other awards, but the winners will be chosen from writers across a variety of topics and interest groups. “The criteria were really strict,” says Chen. “But essentially, we were looking for people who are taking creative risks, who are constantly pushing the boundaries and finding new ways to connect with their audience.”
Instagram wants to make this award permanent. “We’re curious to see how it’s received and how the winners will enjoy this kind of ‘Instagram moment of fame,’” Chen says.
The names of the winners will be announced on October 16.
