AI was supposed to destroy engineering professions, but new data suggests otherwise: in 2025, engineers accounted for 55% of all new employees at tech giants
In May, the number of layoffs in the tech sector reached its highest monthly rate in recent years, and artificial intelligence was the most common reason cited.

In theory, software development is the most vulnerable job field to automation, given the rapid adoption of AI-powered coding tools. However, researchers at venture capital firm SignalFire say that hiring data suggests otherwise.
Analysis by SignalFire, which tracked the careers of millions of workers at more than 80 million companies, suggests that engineering will be the most resilient of all professional fields in 2025. Rather than focusing on layoffs — which are difficult to track because people often don’t immediately update their employment status after losing their jobs — SignalFire examined hiring data as a more accurate indicator of real-time labor market trends, TechCrunch reports .
According to SignalFire's latest "State of Talent Report," while overall hiring at large tech companies has declined by 25% compared to 2019 levels, the number of engineering vacancies has experienced a much smaller decline — just 11%.
What’s more, in 2025, engineers accounted for 55% of all new hires at the 12 companies SignalFire categorizes as tech giants: Alphabet, Meta, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix, Nvidia, Tesla, Uber, Airbnb, Block, and Stripe. That’s a significant jump from 2019, when engineers accounted for just 46% of all new hires, according to the report.
According to SignalFire, the ongoing need for engineers was even more evident in early-stage startups, which overall hired 7% more engineers in 2025 than in 2019.
If AI were truly replacing engineering talent, says SignalFire’s head of research, Asher Bantock, engineering recruitment would be the first to suffer amid the current hiring slump in the tech sector. Instead, data shows that engineering headcount is growing faster than most other tech professions.
Тест dev.ua
