The device was lifted into the mesosphere above Kiruna, Sweden, using a stratospheric balloon and dropped from a height of 30,607 meters. The smartphone fell without a parachute, heating system or any additional layers of protection for 25 minutes, withstanding temperatures down to -60 °C, Dexerto writes .
The Guinness Book of World Records recorded this as the “highest fall of a mobile phone in a case onto a natural landscape.” According to the commission’s requirements, the case had to touch the ground first.
It took more than five hours to search for the smartphone in the Swedish wilderness after the tracker narrowed the search area to two kilometers.
All the functions of the device were preserved - the phone turned on, took photos and received calls, and there was no damage to the case.
The AirX cover is made from a single, recyclable material, and its engineers were inspired by car airbags and the cushioning system in athletic shoes.
30 км — це вже звучить як тест не стільки самого смартфона, скільки захисного чохла 😄 Цікаво, що після 25 хвилин падіння телефон не просто залишився цілим, а ще й продовжив нормально працювати. Особливо показово, що він пережив температуру до -60 °C. Тепер цікаво було б побачити такий самий тест без чохла — от тоді можна було б реально оцінити міцність самого iPhone.
