Protests, sparked by the catastrophic state of the economy, have swept the country for 12 consecutive days. 45 people have already been killed.
The shutdown was reported by NetBlocks, an organization that monitors internet freedom, noting that it occurred amid increased repression against demonstrators.
This is not a local outage, but a deliberate blocking of mobile networks and providers. Experts emphasize that this shutdown has two strategic goals: to disrupt coordination between protesters within the country and to stop the flow of video evidence of violence by law enforcement agencies to the outside world.
At the time of the shutdown, at least 45 people were already known to have died and over 1,200 were arrested, but now, under the cover of being offline, the scale of the repression could become uncontrollable.
Protests in Iran have been ongoing for 12 days over a catastrophic economic collapse and inflation. It is noted that these are the largest protests since 2022.
This is not the first time that the Iranian authorities have resorted to such actions. Previously, during military operations against Israel, Iran restricted access to the Internet for its own citizens, citing "special conditions" and "cybersecurity."
