Junie for boring routine tasks: JetBrains launches Junie AI coding agent for its IDEs
JetBrains, the company behind coding tools like IntelliJ IDE for Java and Kotlin (and, in fact, the Kotlin language itself), has launched Junie, a new AI-powered coding agent. The agent can be fully delegated to perform routine tasks or collaborate with you to perform more complex tasks.
Using the SWE-Bench Verified test, which consists of 500 common developer tasks, Junie solved 53.6% of them in a single run. Not so long ago, this would have been the highest score, but it is worth noting that currently the most effective models show more than 60%, and Weights & Biases “Programmer O1 crosscheck5” currently leads with a result of 64.6%. JetBrains itself calls Junie’s result “promising”, writes TechCrunch.
But even with a lower score, JetBrains' service may have an advantage because of its tight integration with the rest of the JetBrains IDE. The company notes that while Junie helps developers do their work, a human is always in control of the process, even when delegating tasks to an agent.
“Code generated by AI can be just as flawed as code written by a developer,” the company wrote in the announcement. “Ultimately, Junie isn’t just about speeding up development—it’s also poised to raise the bar on code quality. Combining the power of JetBrains IDE and LLM, Junie can generate code, run reviews, write tests, and verify their execution.”
The service is currently only available through an early access waitlist program. It also currently only works on Linux and Mac, as well as in the IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate and PyCharm Professional development environments, and will soon be available for WebStorm.
Google has unveiled a new version of its AI. Gemini 2.0 will help with coding and create agents that can "think, remember, plan, and even act on your behalf"
