Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, has cleared up the confusion surrounding potential ads appearing in the AI chatbot. In a post on X, Turley stated that “there are no active ad tests” and that “any screenshots you may see are either fake or not ads.
The explanation from the OpenAI CEO came after another post on X by former xAI employee Benjamin De Kraker went viral, which included a screenshot showing the ability to shop at Target in a conversation with ChatGPT, Engadget writes .
OpenAI’s Daniel Macauley responded to the post, claiming that it wasn’t an ad, but rather an example of the app integration the company announced in October. However, the company’s chief scientific officer Mark Chen also responded to X that they had “fallen short” in this case, adding that “anything that feels like an ad should be treated with caution.”
"We've disabled this type of recommendation while we improve the accuracy of the model," Chen wrote on X. "We're also working on better controls so you can reduce or turn it off if you find it's not helpful."
The question of whether ChatGPT will feature advertising is still a matter of debate. However, in November, code was found in the beta version of the ChatGPT Android app that repeatedly mentioned advertising. Moreover, even in his post, where Nick Turley denied the presence of active advertising, he added: “if we do introduce advertising, we will use a thoughtful approach.” Turley also emphasized: “people trust ChatGPT, and any actions we take will be aimed at respecting that trust.”
Recall that Sam Altman announced a "code red" : the implementation of some projects is postponed, in particular the introduction of advertising. The company intends to focus more on improving ChatGPT.
